Rio and I hopped on a plane this last week going on our yearly trip to Denver to see my fave band, The Head and The Heart. We only started this tradish last year but its kinda like a thing now. If they are playing we are going and getting altitude sickness.
The first time I saw THATH was in SF at Outside Lands and I fell in love instantly. The last time I had a favorite band it was Eminem and I was in the third grade, I’m not going to go there because it was intense. This band is truly magical and I really value every member of the band. If I had to get drunk with one of them though it’d prob be Tyler. And Charity. And Kenny. And John. And Chris. And Matty. And Josiah too, but he can drink water. I’ll talk more about this band in the future.
Heres one of my fave songs from their first album (my favorite album)
I know we live in Chicago, and Chicago has some of the best food eva. But I LOVE the Denver food game. Last year we had some of the best meals I’ve ever had in my life that we talked about for months and months. So I’m going to start with the most important thing, FOOD.
where we ate
Snooze AM Eatry
We got off the plane at like 8 am after basically no sleep, got in the uber and went straight to Snooze and holy shit, that place lives up to the hype. We tried to go last year but the wait was super long and we boarding hangry, so we skipped it. This trip it was an absolute must, and I am so glad we did. The wait was only 20 mins, I ordered a pancake flight,I’m just gonna say, PINEAPPLE UPSIDE DOWN PANCAKE! The waitress bought us a complementary cinnamon roll pancake that was out of this fucking word. FIVE STARS. Would def go again.
The cinnamon roll is huge, flakey, smothered in icing and damn delish. The biscuits are buttery flakey goodness. I always get the mushroom gravy cause ya know, veg life. It’s kinda salty and super heavy but man oh man. D E L I S H. Also the bloodies were on point, but drinking booze sucks in the mile high city. FIVE STARS
We were visiting Rio’s uncles record shop, Twist and Shout and stopped in this chocolate shop next door for a quick sweet treat. We didn’t eat a full meal here but I feel like this place should be mentioned because, THERE IS CHOCOLATE IN EVERYTHING ON THE MENU. everything y’all. The grilled cheese has chocolate, the salads have chocolate, the flatbreads. Insane. I wish we would have eaten here because I could tell that the owner really took pride in the chemistry behind the menu and a chocolate grilled cheese honestly sounds so amazing.
This was our second time coming here, I honestly just love the name so much we had to go twice. FUCKING TACOS. Their Vegetarian tacos are so good, there was one that was basically an elote taco. It was incredible. Also their mole sauce was so good I was eating it by itself.
Probably the best meal we had in Denver. We went out with Rio’s Aunt and Uncle our last night there to celebrate. I just started eating fish again and I don’t do it often, but shit this fish was buttery goodness. The owner of the restaurant owns three in a row and they are ALL POPPIN. Every single thing I put in the my mouth at that place was incredible. We started with a beet salad which seems like oh whatever a beet salad is a beet salad, WRONG, the beets were warm and the lettuce was cold, the dressing was perfect and there was garlic involved. I fucking love garlic. The miso eggplant, OMG I’m salivating, I honestly wanted to order another one and eat it all by myself. Eggplant can be tricky the texture is kinda weird, and it can get so watery and mushy. This was not, it was ugh, it was just so damn good. The fish is flown in daily from Japan, and was definitely the right time to be more adventurous eating fish. We ended the meal with desserts. The pineapple upside down cake with lychee ice cream (special order the lychee ice cream), that was another thing I wanted to order a second of and keep all to myself. I will 100% be visiting Izakaya again next year. ONE HUNDRED STARS
What we did/ Where we went out
(booze ‘n shit)
If you’ve never seen a show at the Red Rocks you are truly missing out. The first time we went I was so overwhelmed by the beauty of the venue I cried multiple times. Seeing my favorite band there (twice) was so incredible. You stop every once in a while to look around and really be like holy shit, this is real.
PS. I had never heard of GROUPLOVE before this show, OMFG they are fucking amazing live. I am totally obsessed with them. Fun fact the lead lady Hannah Hooper has an ass that wont quit.
I met Henna Luna last year at Base Coat Nail Salon, after stalking her insta I needed a Henna appointment. Day 2 of the Denver trip we met her in a park, sat on the grass in the sunshine and got henna. I even convinced Rio to get some and he could not stop staring at it.
Santa Fe Art Walk
Apparently every first Friday in Denver the city turns in to a gigantic gallery. The Santa Fe art walk was so fun to witness. Food trucks, booze and weird ass art. Definitely a fun experience.
After the art walk with one of Rios oldest friends we went to this really fucking cool speak easy bar thats in an ice cream shops freezer. You walk to the back of the ice cream shop to this big freezer door and turn the light switch with alerts the staff inside, some guy pops out of the freezer, checks your ID and tells you how long to wait. There are a ton of mini games to play while you wait, mini connect four is cute AF. We waited about 15 minutes then he pops back out to let us know its our time, we go into the freezer and he makes us shut the door behind us before opening the second door, so exclusive. The bar is this super dark Star Wars-ey themed cocktail bar. We ordered three cocktails to share but due to altitude sickness I was unable to have more than a sip with out wanting to die.
Lakeside Amusement Park
I have to include this place because it’s weird as fuck. It’s a super old run down creepy ass amusement park. Im pretty convinced all the employees were murdered there, they are ghosts that cant escape the park. ITS SO CREEPY, but so worth going to check out.
Denver is a really awesome city to visit, it’s SO different from Chicago its a true vacation. But man that altitude is no joke.
